*Black Eye Peas*
Many Cajuns truly believe that eating certain foods on New Years’ Day will bring good luck throughout the year. One dish enjoyed on New Year’s Day and eaten throughout the year is Black Eye Peas.
The Black Eyed Peas are called such because of their dark color, which resembles a black eye. They are also called “Cow Peas” by some people because they look similar to cow patties. The peas are small, round, brownish black beans, with a shiny outer covering. They have a tan or brownish color inside and can be purchased dried or canned in most grocery stores.
Black Eyed Peas are very high in protein, iron and fiber which makes them a great choice for vegetarians looking to get more protein into their diet. A serving of 1/2 cup cooked Black Eyed Peas contains 15 grams of protein which is equivalent to 2 ounces of lean meat! They also contain vitamin B12 which assists with red blood cell production as well as folate (folic acid) which helps prevent birth defects like spinal bifida when consumed during pregnancy
